UX Design
Research
Type 4 introduces a flexible toggle, giving users the freedom to choose between their personal wallpaper and Glance’s dynamic experience without friction.
Through user feedback, we discovered:
Some users enjoy Glance’s dynamic wallpapers but don’t always want them active.
Others want personal photos on their lock screen while still receiving Glance notifications.
Existing modes were limited and rigid—users couldn’t control the experience in the moment.
This gap presented an opportunity to design a simple, intuitive switch that could balance personalization with brand engagement.
The goal was to empower users with choice while maintaining engagement.
Keep personal wallpapers intact without losing Glance content.
Allow an effortless toggle between modes.
Track adoption and satisfaction via toggle usage, time in each mode, and retention.
This gap presented an opportunity to design a simple, intuitive switch that could balance personalization with brand engagement.
Research & Insights
Reviewed feedback highlighting frustration around lock-screen control.
Explored patterns in personalization preferences, especially among Japanese users.
User Feedback (Qualitative)
User 1
“I love the Glance wallpapers, but sometimes I just want my own photo to stay.”
User 2
“Switching between personal and Glance feels complicated. Why can’t it be instant?”
User 3
“I use Glance mostly for news, but I don’t want it to replace my personal wallpaper every time.”
Survey Results (Quantitative)
From an internal survey of 250+ users
Market & Regional Insights
Japan: High personalization culture (stickers, themes, custom wallpapers are mainstream). A toggle feature resonates strongly here.
India: Glance is widely adopted, but many users prefer to keep personal wallpapers. Flexibility could improve retention
Global trend: Research from Statista shows 65% of smartphone users regularly customize their lock screen—suggesting personalization is a key expectation.
Behavioral Data (from analytics, hypothetical)
Average user interaction with Glance wallpapers: 12–15 unlocks per day.
Drop-off rate: 18% of users disable Glance within the first month due to wallpaper preference conflicts.
Users who had more control over personalization showed 20% higher retention in A/B experiments.
Exploration
Considered gesture-based switching and AI-driven auto modes.
Decided on a clear toggle UI the simplest, most user-friendly approach.
Design Evolution
Sketched early wireframes to map wallpaper states.
Created interactive prototypes showcasing how the toggle works. Iterated based on internal feedback for clarity and visibility.
